Poverty in Winnipeg’s Inner City. A CCPA Report

This year’s State of the Inner City Report by CCPA-Manitoba, launched in December at Circle of Life Thunderbird House, shows that gains have been made in poverty rates in the past 15 years in the poorest neighbourhoods of Winnipeg.

Despite some negative coverage in the local media (see Generosity doesn’t solve poverty and Selinger gives poor answer to bad report card on poverty, Winnipeg Free Press), most of the efforts towards poverty reduction have been carried out by community-based organizations, and often with the support of the provincial government, as pointed out by Shauna MacKinnon (University of Winnipeg) and Darcy Penner (Canadian CED Network Manitoba) in their latest responses.
