Participatory Governance and Territorial Development Laboratory in Emilia Romagna (Italy)

Novi di Modena, International Training Seminar in the Emilia Romagna Region (Italy)

On 10 June 2013, the President of the KIP International School, Luciano Carrino, and the Director General of the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Luigi Benedetti, signed a framework agreement for the continuation and enhancement of the project “Premio René Cassin”, for the organization of a Laboratory related to participatory local democracy as part of the international network of human development laboratories promoted by the KIP International School, and for the organization of workshops and exchanges of experience related to the democratic governance of local human development and participatory democracy for actors from the countries where the KIP International School and its Universitas programme are active and for institutional actors and researchers from the Emilia-Romagna Region and other interested Italian Regions.

The first activity has been already realized. A one-week intensive training workshop on Participatory Governance and Territorial Development has been organized for a group of local administrators, practitioners and researchers from Senegal, where the KIP International School has ongoing activities. The course has been organized as an exchange of innovative practices and knowledge, with on-site visits to experiences of participatory and democratic governance of territorial development in the Region.

As a result, those experiences considered most coherent with the objectives and methods of human development will be identified and systematized as the first step in consolidating an international KIP laboratory open to the participation of students, professionals and researchers from the Emilia Romagna Region, and other Regions and countries that are associated with the KIP International School. The workshop has also led to other forms of collaboration, technical assistance and exchanges that have been agreed on with the participants.
